TO THE EARL OF DARTMOUTH

In the Johnson Calendar, p. 518, is listed a letter of April 22d to the Earl of Dartmouth about the importance of cultivating the friendship of the upper Senecas and about measures for bringing back such as have emigrated to the Ohio country (printed in Doc. Rel. to Col. Hist., N. Y., 8:361-62).

New york April 25th: 1772.

DEAR SIR,

I have received your Letters of the 6th: and 14th Inst: as also your Letter concerning Mr: Wetherhead's Case which last I have transmitted to the Treasury and recommended an Indemnification which I hope will be attended to.

A Warrant is made out for the Payment of the Account inclosed in your Favor of the 6th: Inst:, which you will have had Notice of. I am sorry for the Accident that has happened at Fort-Hunter,3 and readily agreed to the Request made by the Mohocks, to use the Remainder of the Timbers, that will be of Service towards rebuilding the Houses that were burned.

I am to thank you for the Copy of the Proceedings at the Congress held with the Six Nations on the 7th: Inst:, and rejoice to find that Confederacy so well affected towards us. I know no more than yourself what to say about the Trade, in which Matter
