TO FREDERICK HALDIMAND

A. L. S.1

Johnson Hall Octbr. 29th, 1773

DEAR SIR

I am favored with yours accompanying the Warrant for the Amount of my last Accts. for which I am oblidged to You, as also for the Hint you gave me concerning Kennedy. He is a man I never See before, neither shall I employ him; Maisonville I employ, & think I can Confide in him, having tryed him some years, & have had a general good character of him from Officers & others to the Westward.

It is a perplexing business because their Ideas respecting punishments are so different from ours, at the same time that it is a Duty we owe to the Crown & to the Public to insist on the Satisfaction required by our Laws. You will hear farther from me upon this after their Arrival;

Your Indulgence to Capt. McLeod on my Application is extremely oblidging, He is verry thankfull for it, & I trust that it may not be attended with inconvenience to the Service.

I am glad to hear of the Safe arrival & encrease of Genrl. Gages Family in England, and I am Always with great truth & regard,

Dear Sir,
  Youe most obedient
    & most Humble Servant

W. JOHNSON

P. S. After finishing the foregoing, I received a letter from Major Basset with an answer from ye. Poutawatamies of St. Joseph to a Speech sent by me to them last Spring, in wch. the
